Android 2.1 upgrade for HTC Hero

Great news recently reported over at 3g.co.uk in relation to the HTC Hero Smartphone.

It seems that HTC have now confirmed that the HTC Hero will be upgraded to the latest Android version which is 2.1, currently the device runs on version 1.6 of the Android OS but the upgrade will bring it right up to date.

What is surprising is that with the upgrade there is very little difference between the HTC Hero and the HTC Legend which is about to launch later on this month. When you take into consideration that the Hero has be3en available for a much longer period and is available on multiple networks it may well offer users better value than the Legend.

Those of you that are currently on Orange or T Mobile will be able to upgrade your Hero to Android 2.1 from April 16th those on 3 will need to wait until 22nd April. Android 2.1 will give the ability to have 5 different home screens and a quick contact which makes things easier t switch between contacts and social network contacts.

Actually Herman, it’s only the first batch of Hero’s that runs on 1.5.

The majority of the hero’s made, mine included, are running the 1.6 update.

    Thanks.

Actually Joe, my Hero is 6 weeks old. And it runs on 1.5. What first batch are you talking about ? And where you get the info the majority runs on 1.6. Even more. Where you think you can download 1.6 (from HTC) ….

    Thanks

Mine runs 1.5, I bought this in Oct of last year. As far as I’m aware HTC skipped 1.6 and 2.0 altogether.

Also the article states “Android 2.1 will give the ability to have 5 different home screens”. I hope not! I already have 7 home screens!

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Mine to runs on 1.5 and it’s just a week old. But the question is what is the release date for 2.1 and if it’s being released where can I find it. I’ve checked on HTC site and there the firmware version is even older than I’ve already installed.

Your hero its 6weeks old, that means that you bought it 6weeks ago,but not that its been made 6weeks ago…i got mine from december and its on 1.6…like most of the hero…

  6. James says:

HTC didn't issue a 1.6 update for the Hero They specifically bypassed it as it didn't add any value to the existing handset as the sense UI changes already installed covered most of the 1.6 'updates' already.

As of Saturday my Hero runs 2.1, the upgrade finally came OTA taking about twenty minutes in all to download and a further ten minutes to finally install. Data was not lost, but a few setting were returned to the default. It was worth waiting for.
