Was Apple Exec Mark Papermaster Fired over iPhone 4 Antenngate?

Apple has received a lot of flak over the iPhone 4 antennagate issue, and no doubt top Apple execs are somewhat annoyed that it happened in the first place, and eventually someone has to pay for such a big cock-up; well it looks like Mark Papermaster may have been its first casualty.

According to an article by Marc Flores of Intomobile, Apple has confirmed a report by The New York Times that Mark Papermaster, the exec in charge of hardware had left the company.

Although it is unclear whether Papermaster left of his own accord or was fired, Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesperson has said that Papermaster “is leaving the company and Bob Mansfield, senior vice president of Macintosh hardware engineering, is assuming his responsibilities.”

However, according to John Gruber of Daring Fireball…” From what I’ve heard, it’s clear he was canned. Papermaster was a conspicuous absence at the Antennagate press conference. Inside Apple, he’s “the guy responsible for the antenna” – that’s a quote from a source back on July 23. (Another quote from the same source: “Apparently the antenna guys used to have a big chip on their shoulder. No more.”)

So if true it does appear that Papermaster has paid the price for the iPhone 4 antenna issue. What do you think, did Papermaster leave under his own decision or was he dismissed over antennagate?
