Honor Magic 2 announced!

#

Huawei did wonders with their Honor sub-brand. It made it present across the globe, offering a lot of smartphones with excellent hardware for a low price. With that, it became a direct competition to Xiaomi, and it’s certainly paying for it. However, the Honor brand also offers premium smartphone’s as well. And yes, they’re still at a lower price. On an event in China, the company announced the Honor Magic 2, their latest flagship device with a lot of features. Let’s take a closer look at it!

Design

Starting with the design, we can see that Honor also went in on the full-view display by including a slider design, similar to the Mi Mix 3. The whole display moves to the bottom, revealing the front cameras and sensors behind it. Speaking of the display, the device has a 6.39” AMOLED panel with 2340 x 1080 resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Honor claims that it has an almost 100 percent screen-to-body ratio, but we’re not so sure of that. Nevertheless, it’s impressive to get that much display on the front, without the need of a notch. Also, the display features a fingerprint sensor under it. This is the first Honor device to include it, and we’re happy for them. On the back, you will find the camera setup in the top corner. The back is made from glass and comes in two different colors: Blue and Purple.

Features

Jumping inside the Honor Magic 2, you will see that this device is clearly packing premium hardware. Starting with the chipset, the device features the Kirin 980 processor. Accompanied by the MP10 GPU, this combination will handle any task you throw at it swiftly. For the memory, there are some options to choose from. You can get this device with 6 or 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of internal storage. Finally, the device comes with a 3500mAh battery, which should easily last you through a full day of use.

Jumping over to the cameras, you will find a triple camera setup on both the front and the back of the device. Huawei and Honor went all-in on this, giving you a sensor for every need. Starting with the back, the primary sensor is a 16MP ultra-wide shooter with f/1.8 aperture. Next, you have a 16MP RGB shooter with f/2.4 aperture. And the third 24MP monochrome shooter with f/1.8 aperture completes the rear setup. Pictures should come out great, with excellent dynamic range and color saturation. On the front, you have the primary 16MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture. This is accompanied by two other 2MP depth sensors with f/2.4 aperture. They’re going to be used for portrait mode shots and Face Unlock capabilities.

Finally, the Honor Magic 2 comes with EMUI 9.0, based on Android 9.0 Pie. It packs in a lot of useful features, with the most noteworthy one being the new YOYO virtual assistant. Apparently, YOYO is an “all-in-one smart-living enabler possessed with mind-reading and machine-learning capabilities”. That claim is quite interesting, especially the mind-reading part.

Pricing and availability

The Honor Magic 2 will sadly only be available in China only for now. It goes on sale on November 6th for a starting price of ~$545.
