Android Comes to Cricket with Kyocera Zio
Obviously Cricket isn’t the biggest mobile phone carrier in the mobile space, but they have now entered the Android arena by gaining their first Android based smartphone, the Kyocera Zio.
According to an article over on i4u by way of the guys over at Android and Me, Cricket Wireless will offer the Kyocera Zio as of the 15th of August and will command a price tag of somewhere between $249 and $299 when based on a $55 unlimited plan.
For that price the Kyocera Zio offers the user a 3.5 inch WVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Qualcomm 600 MHz processor and runs Android 1.6 OS with the possibility of Kyocera upgrading to Android 2x but no gurantee the Cricket Kyocera Zio will see the OS update.
Cricket has coverage in all 50 US states due to a roaming agreement with Sprint and metroPCS. If you are looking for an entry level Android device you make like to check out the Kyocera Zio video which can be viewed below…enjoy.

why is it the zio will not run 2.0/2.1 (Eclair) ? as its on Sprint roaming system?
purchased the zio a few days ago and it is the best product chricket has ever sold. Its about time. I have had no problems at all with it.
432 hours standby time! 18 days! There is NO WAY that this phone has 432 hours of standby time.
I purchased this phone along with switching to Cricket from T Mobile to cut my bill in half. Only thing is either Cricket's service sucks really bad or the phone sucks really bad. I have never had so many problems with a phone from slow response, freezing, i've had to take the battery out and reinsert many times, and i get text messages and missed phone calls hours later.
Yeah, this phone does NOT have 432 hours of standby time. I don't feel that i'm on my phone a lot but by the end of the day, my battery time is in the red. BUY a CARCHARGER for sure! Also, either this phone sucks so bad or Cricket's service sucks so bad. If the phone has been sitting in one place for a long time, it sort of like freezes and doesn't take text messages or phone calls, until you touch it or move somewhere else. When i feel i haven't gotten a call or notification or text for a few hours OR notice i am out of range….I have to take out the battery and reinsert at least once a day or turn the phone off/on just to get text messages / phone calls through. I get a lot of 2nd parts of text messages but not the first part, so the sentences don't make sense.
The battery life is the worst Ive ever seen. I've had this thing for three weeks now, was FULLY charged when I went to bed and the battery was dead when I woke up 9 hours later. I charge it 2-3 times a day. It freezes up constantly. As far as apps and stuff go it's a really cool phone. There are still some limitations because its prepaid there are some things you can't do, but otherwise an awesome phone when its not freezing up. I agree about the text messages too. I will get the second half of a text and then half an hour or sometimes an hour later finally get the first half. Im 28, so when I couldn't get all of my notifications to come immediately to my phone like on an iphone I had several teengers look at it (they know about all this stuff more so than I do!!!) and there are still some features that are lacking. I would say that this is a great phone for your kids if you wanna save some money vs At&t, or someone that doesn't use their phone a lot. But if you're in it for features or need a reliable phone for work purposes and receiving important messages, definitely look elsewhere!
To extend your battery life, go to Market and install Advanced Task Killer. Every time you turn on your phone, probably 10 apps automatically run and kill your battery. The task killer can be used to shut off apps and extend battery life.
