2nd quarter sees 42 million mobile phones shipped in USA

According to new data from Strategy Analytics, despite the growing concerns over economic slowdown, mobile phone manufacturers actually shipped roughly 42 million mobile handsets within the United States during the second quarter of 2008.

The report represents a 5 percent increase in mobile handset shipments over the previous quarter which shipped 39.8 million.

Research in Motion, for the first time hit double digit market share by shipping 4.5 million mobile phones. While Research In Motion’s bread and butter is enterprise customers, RIM has pulled in a larger share of the consumer market with the BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry pearl.

LG Electronics sit in second place with shipping 8.8 million handsets which is 21 percent of the market, and much due to the success of the LG Voyager.

Top spot goes to believe it or not, Motorola by shipping 10.8 million handsets holding more than a quarter of the market.

Samsung
drops in with 7.8 million mobile handsets shipped so nabs about 19 percent of the market. RIM sat in 4th with Nokia bring up the rear at 5th.
