There is apparently an iPhone jailbreak hack called Gridlock which enables the user to place application icons on their home screen and actually doesn’t interfere with their wallpaper and even enables the user to make a pattern.

According to an article over on TiPb

by Brian, Gridlock for the iPhone is simple to use as all that is required is for the user to hold down on an icon which will make said the application jiggle as normal and then you can move said icon to anywhere you wish.
