Elusive Droid RAZR HD camera letdown & release later than expected

The Motorola Droid RAZR HD is a smartphone that has been grabbing a lot of attention for a while, although the release date has still not been set and we were hoping that it would have hit the shelves by now. We know there’s a lot of interest in this phone from comments to our previous articles on it so today’s news may be rather a letdown if you’re one of those who were hoping for a 13-megapixel Droid RAZR HD camera. We also have news that a release may not occur for some months yet which may also disappoint many readers.

The Droid RAZR HD looks to be heading to Verizon in the U.S. and we have considered it as credible competition for the Galaxy S3. However as a release date is still not forthcoming it may instead find itself up against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or Apple’s iPhone 5, both of which could offer tough competition. As a brief recap we’ll remind you that rumored specs and features of the Droid RAZR HD include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 4.6-inch 720p HD display, 2530mAh battery, 4G LTE connectivity and all running on Android ICS with a 4.1 Jelly Bean update expected in 2013.

It had particular appeal to those who enjoy using their smartphones for photography because of its hotly anticipated 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash. However it now seems that the camera has been rather over-egged as Phone Arena reports on receiving information that the camera will only have an 8-megapixel sensor. This could be a real disappointment for some people who’ve been waiting patiently for the Droid RAZR HD to appear.

The same source also confirmed the other rumored specs and features that we’ve already mentioned but added that the display will have ColorBoost technology and that the storage of the phone will be expandable via microSD card, although the internal storage is still unclear. A release date of October/November is also mentioned. Some of you may also have been aware of the rumors that sprang up at the weekend regarding a release in October for the Droid RAZR HD and also mentioning a possible Droid RAZR Maxx HD. Droid-Life reported this rumor, sourced from Hot Hardware, but Phone Arena’s source tells how there will not be a RAZR Maxx HD and it seems as though this could have been a figment in someone’s over-fertile imagination.

As far as the release date of the Droid RAZR HD goes, if it comes in October or November that will be another letdown for many. It is now several weeks since the RAZR HD passed through the FCC and at that time it was widely expected that it would release sooner rather than later. We certainly didn’t imagine that eager consumers would still have to wait through the rest of August, September and maybe some weeks after before the launch. It does seem rather odd to us that if the phone is ready to go that Motorola wouldn’t make use of the weeks before other major smartphone launches to get its offering to the shelves first but of course nothing is yet confirmed about this.

We shall be looking for any further news and developments on the arrival of the Droid RAZR HD and will bring you the latest as we hear it. What do you think of the latest news that the Droid RAZR HD could only have an 8-megapixel camera rather than the 13-megapixels previously touted? Would this put you off purchasing the phone? Also we’d be interested to hear from readers in regard to a likely October or November release date. If you’ve already been waiting some time are you prepared to go on waiting or might you look towards another smartphone choice? Send your comments to let us know.

OK, let me explain this to you so you guys can stop saying this Droid or that Droid appear to be heading to Verizon. If its a Droid, it WILL be on Verizon as Verizon owns the Droid name, not Motorola. Now, make this mistake no more…
