Google Glass update to bring Android 4.4 KitKat

#

Many readers will know that Google Glass is currently in development and only being used by those in the Google Glass Explorer Program. We like to keep up-to-date with the latest news on this product, and we now know that a Google Glass update is on the way that will bring the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

Back in January new Google Glass frames for prescription lenses were introduced, and further to this we shared a video showing how to attach the new frames to Google Glass. This latest news is also rather significant, as until now Google Glass has been making use of the rather old Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Some Glass Explorers will have been disappointed that the XE14 software update that was due last month hasn’t materialized, so news of the Android 4.4 update may go some way to assuaging those users. The exact time of the KitKat update hasn’t been disclosed but Googler Teresa Z wrote, “Developers, we know you’re gonna be excited too. But it’s also something that we don’t want to send to you all until it’s just right.”

Some Glass Explorers may still feel a little let down about the lack of monthly updates now, with no update in January and the expected February XE14 update failing to arrive on time. That was also acknowledged by Teresa Z who said, “What we had planned for February just isn’t ready for primetime yet. So… we’ve decided to hold off for now.”

It was also said that although there will no longer be monthly updates, there would still be regular larger software upgrades that should then be more stable. If you’re a Glass Explorer are you pleased about the upcoming update to Android 4.4 KitKat? Maybe you’re more disappointed that the XE14 update failed to show? Let us know by sending your comments.
