Expected iOS 5.1 jailbreak could be deferred to iOS 6

There’s some very interesting news today for the many of you still waiting patiently for the iOS 5.1 jailbreak to become available. If a recent blog post from renowned hacker pod2g is anything to go by it seems that work on the jailbreak may now be deferred until iOS 6 arrives.

Only a couple of days ago we gave you the latest news from pod2g on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, which was that that hackers had managed to bypass the ASLR but there was still no sign of when it would become available. However pod2g has now been busy on his personal blog and posted a poll asking interested parties whether they think the iOS 5.1 jailbreak should be held off for iOS 6. While this suggestion may make many potential jailbreakers unhappy it does make a certain amount of sense.

Apple’s WWDC 2012 has just been confirmed for June and one of the key focuses of the event is iOS. It’s widely expected that the next major operating system update, iOS 6, may be revealed at the event in which case iOS 5.1 exploits would undoubtedly be patched up. As iOS 6 may be only just over a month away pod2g’s question is understandable as if iOS 6 does arrive in June then pod2g and other Chronic Dev and Dev Team members will basically have to begin work on the jailbreak again.

News of the poll from pod2g came to us from iDownloadBlog and it seems the results will be a major factor in the decision about whether to hold off the iOS 5.1 jailbreak. Of course there’s no confirmation that iOS 6 will definitely make an arrival in June and that may well influence many people’s answer. We’ve just taken a look at the latest results of the poll (still ongoing) and incredibly over 80,000 people have already voted.

At present in response to “Shall we hold off the jailbreak for iOS 6?”, 57% say No and to release as soon as possible, 40% say that iOS 6 will be a challenge and to hold back while 2% seem unconcerned as they have responded to, “Where’s my bottle of beer? You may want to head over to the poll yourself (here) to cast your own vote.

We’d like to hear from readers about this poll and the possibility that the iOS 5.1 jailbreak will be deferred. Does the news frustrate you, especially considering iOS 6 is not yet confirmed as coming in June (unless pod2g knows something we don’t)? Maybe you think it makes complete sense to hold back the update until the arrival of iOS 6? Send your comments to let us know.
