Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 official update still possible

#

Samsung pulled something of a surprise a few days ago by supplying a list of handsets due to receive the latest version of the Android operating system in the US, which is something the company doesn’t usually do. Since then another list has appeared for a number of international handsets that had one major handset missing, but a Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 official update is still possible.

Yesterday a list appeared from Samsung Poland’s official Android KitKat update list that had a number of handsets listed that was pretty similar to the one that appeared for the US. The trouble is there was no mention of the Samsung Galaxy S3 that has been tipped to be getting Android 4.4 KitKat at some point in the future previously.

Many have suggested it was because the US version of the handset has 2GB of RAM while the international version only has 1GB, and while Android KitKat was built to run on hardware with 512MB of RAM, many feel that it maybe the Samsung TouchWiz overlay preventing Samsung for providing the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the Galaxy S3.

The list that was provided in the US though featured the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini which also only has 1GB of RAM, so it remains to be seen if this latest list out of Poland is wrong or incomplete. If an official update is not provided for the international version of the Galaxy S3 many users will simply install a custom ROM.

There will be some that already have one installed on their device and we recently saw one become available for the Samsung Galaxy S2 for Android KitKat. We might get some more clarification on the situation in the coming days so there is still hope that Samsung will provide KitKat for the Galaxy S3, which would surely be the last update it does see, but comes as users are still having problems with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Do you think Samsung will provide an official update for the Galaxy S3?

I like Samsung phones for the hardware and form factor but can’t stand Touchwizz so flash something more favourable anyway. i9300 flies with Temasek’s Unofficial CM11, as will my next upgrade, the Note 3. So official updates are of no concern to me!

I am already using Temasek’s Unofficial CM11 which is excellent. I don’t like touchwiz. The good thing about Temasek’s Unofficial CM11 is that is has a theme chooser so you can set phone up how you like. Its a waste of time waiting for official updates on carriers as they take too long. I too love samsung but seriously thinking about LG ,HTC or Sony for next upgrade in September the build quality is still cheap for Samsung which lets it down. If the S5 is not a big enough upgrade IE metal I will be going elsewhere. I also use my handset for music & the Samsung player is a bag of doo doo DSP built into Cyanagenmod is is excellent.Samsung sort it out.

Apple at least still provides updates for the iPhone 4. (A phone they started selling in October 2008 and sold September 2012.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is still being sold both in tall and mini versions. No update is scandalous.

If you live in the US, I think you will get the official update with no problems, I have a 1GB RAM and I’m pretty upset I will probably not get to see KitKat…

the GS3 is a really old phone, just consider yourself lucky that you got the 4.3 update. the HTC one X, which was supposed to battle the s3 haven’t even got 4.2.2 yet and you can always just root your phone and flash a 4.4 rom 😀
